I love transparent watercolors. They were the emphasis for my art degree and are the subject for my current college course. . If you’ve dabbled in watercolors before, you know they are 1. Frustrating to attempt to control 2. Mistakes are difficult to cover (because hello, transparent watercolors) 3. You have to preserve any white of the paper by masking (there is no white paint) 4. Planning is essential as winging it could be detrimental . If you know me, the above list is anxiety-inducing and for a self-proclaimed perfectionist, I also recognize there are art forms out there that cause much less stress. . Honestly, knowing that watercolors have a mind of their own are the constant reminder that perfection is unattainable and rather, I should aim for progress and growth. . I spent the weekend working on a watercolor painting due for class tomorrow. I somehow finished an entire day early, which means I have a whole day to reflect on the process and nitpick the things I would have done differently and the successes I achieved along the way. . The concept of Practice making progress is easily applied to any skill you are hoping to better, (athletics, baking, mathematics, writing) but since you are reading the words of an art teacher—painting it is. I began planning my current painting in December, digitally. I spent nearly ten hours digitally painting my planning composition before painting the watercolor piece. Another 40 hours went into the watercolor version. . It isn’t perfect. The drafting tape ripped the surface of the paper in areas. I would have done some things differently. It isn’t perfect. But there are fifty hours of learning and progress that took place. . Remember darling, perfection is unattainable. . Focus on the progress, even if others can’t see the practice that went into it. . Russian Turtle Cake

My mother-in-law introduced me to a number of delicious Russian cakes, but this is one of my favorites. If you’ve never tried a Russian cake, it isn’t as sweet as a cake you’d find in an American bakery—it is super soft, has many layers, and will always have you going back for a second slice.

Turnip Soufflé

If you haven't noticed, I love turnips. I also love bacon and potatoes and carrots. Ok I love almost all veggies (except lentils, gross). This turnips soufflé will feed your family for a day, maybe two days if you make another. And you will after you have a bite.

Scalloped Pineapple

Warm pineapple and custardy bread with a caramelized crunch…that is the best I can describe this little known sweet treat. My great-grandmother’s Scalloped Pineapple is a dish I have only seen served by my mother.

Russian Cucumber Salad

This has become our family go-to as it is always so satisfying. Due to the cucumbers and tomatoes, this salad is best eaten the day-of. When served as a side dish, we use the ¼ cup of mayo and ¼ t salt.

This is, by far, the greatest potato salad recipe EVER! I call it a potato salad, but the truth is there are near equal parts of all ingredients in this salad. There are numerous variations of this salad, but I think I have perfected it to the hubby’s liking.

Kotletki: Russian Meatballs

These savory bites are a great companion to mashed potatoes, toasted bread, diced potatoes, or rice. I tend to double this recipe due to their popularity—they are moist, flavorful, and the perfect bite-size dish.

Garden Brew Stew

I developed this delicious soup and it has been a family favorite ever since. Unfortunately, at the time of this blog post, it is winter in Alaska—meaning only ‘normal-sized’ squash were available. As always, we love topping our soup with yummy parmesan and sour cream, enjoy!

Fried Noodles

This recipe resembles something my Hmong friends taught me how to make when we were sophomores in high school. At the time, I didn’t appreciate the addition of cilantro to the meal, as I wasn’t yet a fan of the delicious greens. Now, I can’t seem to get enough cilantro!

Creamy Dill Potato Salad

Potatoes are one of our most favorite foods as they are delicious and versatile. Red skin potatoes happen to be my favorite potato… mostly because I don’t ever feel the need to peel them! This recipe easily doubles for a crowd, or larger servings if you are a Mozy.

Bundt cakes are cute, serve up to a bajillion people, and are the softest cakes I’ve ever eaten. This chocolate chip Bundt cake is semi homemade—but still one of my favorites.
